Blimpie's subs and sandwiches franchises have been part of the American landscape for nearly 50 years. The tradition of serving the best sandwiches anywhere. First of all, Blimpie is called that because one of the founders, Tony Conza, didn't like the sounds of submarines. Conza, along with Peter DeCarlo and Angelo Bandassare, opened their first store in Hoboken in 1964, and apparently people in the area weren't familiar with the term sandwich, so they were also out.
As the legend says, Conza found Blimpie while leafing through a dictionary and considered it appropriate.
